Joe Collins vs. Maxine Waters: The Defamation Lawsuit and a No-Show Deposition

In 2020, Joe Collins, a Navy veteran and political candidate, filed a defamation lawsuit against Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Today, on February 10th, 2025, Waters was scheduled to appear for a deposition but at the last minute her attorney filed a motion to deny deposition. The deposition is a pivotal moment in our pursuit of accountability, yet Waters’ absence raises questions:
- Why is she avoiding it?
- What does she have to hide?
- Why does she try and use her position to escape accountability?
For me, this case isn’t just about personal vindication. It’s a matter of integrity and accountability in politics as well as veterans rights. The dispute began in the heated race for California’s 43rd Congressional District when Waters made inflammatory claims about my military service.
I have remained determined to clear my name and shed light on the tactics used by entrenched political figures to tarnish their challengers reputations.
The 2020 election cycle saw fierce political combat between Maxine Waters, a long-time incumbent, and myself, Joe Collins, a Navy veteran seeking to bring new leadership to the 43rd Congressional district. However, the campaign took a sharp turn when Waters publicly alleged and ran “MILLIONS” of dollars that I had been dishonorably discharged from the military.
This claim carried serious implications. In the political arena, attacking my military record has caused severe damage to my reputation, credibility and trustworthiness. I quickly refuted Waters’ accusation by presenting my DD-214, the official military discharge document, which confirmed my honorable discharge. Furthermore I provided documentation which showed I left the military voluntarily to pursue my political aspirations, as active-duty service members cannot run for office
Maxine Waters’ false statements not only defamed me but also influenced voters’ perception during a critical moment in the campaign.
Waters’ attempts to avoid deposition is down right disrespectful. How does she find time to embarrass herself on national television criticizing DODGE but seemingly avoids legal responsibilities.
Our lawsuit serves as a call to action for those who believe in political integrity.
By bringing these issues to light, I hope to not only clear my name but also remind voters of the power they hold.
Elected officials, regardless of their tenure or influence, should be subject to the same legal and ethical standards as anyone else.
As the case progresses, voters in California and beyond will have the opportunity to reflect on the importance of truth and accountability in politics.
Supporting candidates who prioritize these values is one way to ensure that public officials truly serve the people they represent.
Please support our campaign to fight Maxine Waters!
